President's Message for January 2016

Written by Kevin Giboney

Dear Valued MCBA Member,

Are you ready to make a difference in your community while helping put your business on the map?  I encourage you to start your 2016 planning by renewing your MCBA membership.

As President Kennedy challenged the Country, it is time to ask what you can do for your association, not what your association can do for you. Though it is easy to come to the Morning Coffee or After Hours networking events or grab a few nuggets of info at membership meetings, are you really making the most of your membership?

The best way to get the mileage from your membership is to get involved.  The MCBA provides a number of avenues to give back to your community and get to know other business leaders by joining a committee, including:  Membership, Networking, Festival, Community Outreach, Scholarship and Operations.

In today’s fast paced world of never ceasing demands, it is a challenge to make time for anything, let alone another committee.  However, the irony of giving is that you tend to get back more than you contribute. Contrary to Newton’s third law, the time you put into the MCBA can result in a greater return for your business.

It was about 10 years ago that I begrudgingly went to a Festival committee meeting and even more grudgingly “volunteered” to head up sponsorship.  Now after serving several years as Festival Chair and several more as the MCBA President, I have to say joining that committee was singularly the best thing I did for my business.  Not only have I become friends with what has developed into my most important referral partners, I have also had more exposure to my “target” audience than any other marketing avenue.

So let me challenge you to commit to the MCBA and your business by plugging into a committee in 2016.  As you consider your options, also consider one of the many membership sponsor opportunities.  Not only do the membership sponsors allow us to support a number of community events such as the Summer Concert Series, Trunk-n-Treat and the Mill Creek Christmas Celebration, it provides prominent exposure for your business.

The MCBA is again offering the convenience of pre-paying for the membership luncheons at a discount.  Pre-payment really helps our volunteers keep the lunches on schedule.

Muhammad Ali said, “service to others is the rent you pay for your room here on earth,” and the rent is due.  What will you do in 2016?

Best Regards,
Kevin Giboney
2016 President, MCBA
